Near the start of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia stories, one of its main characters is suborned into evil with an instantaneous addiction to unlimited amounts of enchanted Turkish Delight. Anyone raised on the over-sweet and underflavoured rosewater and lemon versions prevalent in the UK at the time would fail to understand how this could possibly be. Surely it would make him feel very ill very quickly.
Well, this box of nearly 4lb of assorted genuinely Turkish Turkish Delight (and halva) makes it suddenly perfectly understandable. Packed with the flavours of pomegranate, pistachio, hazelnut, and sesame, with additional notes of coconut, honey, real rose, and even a little chocolate, the nine varieties it contains are all deliciously intense, while not one is even close to being oversweet. Textures vary almost as much as taste. It is much too easy to eat far too much, and still not feel that one has yet had quite enough. All are certainly among the best Turkish Delight I’ve ever tasted. Some are at least close to the most delicious sweets of any sort I’ve ever tasted, and that includes all but the very best chef made chocolates.
At only three weeks or so, shelf life is short, and there’ really is a lot in a box, so perhaps there’s some excuse for a certain lack of restraint. Yes, thank you, I don’t mind if I do…
